Almost all artificial intelligence (AI) radio applications consist of both digital signal processing (DSP) and AI computations. In a typical operation, the DSP software will utilize some of the CPU and GPU computing resources. AirStack Sandbox moves the DSP software to the onboard field programmable gate array (FPGA) and reclaims those GPU computing resources to make the AI software faster and enable more complex algorithms, such as generative AI.
Deepwave recently unveiled AirStack 1.0, our software stack for creating AI Radio applications. We are pleased to present the corresponding update to AirStack Sandbox, our FPGA development kit for the AIR-T. This kit enables developers to create customized firmware to pre-process data for AI applications. Example use cases for AirStack Sandbox include:
- RF Signal Demodulation — Install signal demodulators on the FPGA to free up GPU and CPU computing resources. The demodulator may extract audio, video, or data from over-the-air signals. The data may then be sent to the GPU for AI applications such as natural language processing, computer vision, or deep packet inspection.
- Signal Descriptor Words—Use the FPGA for RF signal analysis and characterize each signal based on its RF properties, such as frequency, bandwidth, pulse width, etc. By delegating this computation to the FPGA, the onboard GPU can be fully leveraged for complex AI tasks.
- Reactive Signal Generation — The FPGA can be utilized to create a set of signals that can be transmitted. At the same time, the receiver can analyze the spectrum with the help of AI and instruct the FPGA to respond with a particular signal from the library.
Our latest release includes changes that help us work better with the AirStack 1.0.0 software, but it doesn’t add new features. The way our software and hardware talk to each other remains the same. We’ve made these changes to improve the user experience.
